Sleep Supplement Sales in 2026: Magnesium and Reishi Are Up, Melatonin Is Down
Walk down the sleep aisle and it looks different than it did a few years ago. Sleep supplements are now a roughly $1.01 billion category in the U.S., according to SPINS data for the 52 weeks to October 4, 2026, and the mix is shifting. Melatonin slipped while several other ingredients grew.
The numbers
- Reishi: up about 53.7%
- Magnesium: up about 22.8%
- GABA: up about 10.8%
- Melatonin: down about 2.7%
These are sales figures. They show where shopper curiosity is heading, not what works for any one person.
What people are exploring
Magnesium is the biggest of the growing categories by sales. If you’re curious about it, our guide to magnesium glycinate for sleep covers the form people most often look for in the evening, and magnesium for anxiety looks at the mineral from a stress angle.
GABA is smaller but growing. It also comes with a real question about how much of it reaches the brain, which we looked at in GABA for sleep.
Reishi has the fastest growth of the group. It’s a mushroom with a long traditional history, now showing up in evening drinks and blends. We don’t have a full reishi guide yet. For background on mushrooms in general, start with mushroom health benefits.
Melatonin is still a large category even with the dip. If you’re weighing it against other options, see melatonin alternatives, or browse best natural sleep supplements for adults over 40 for a wider look.
Calming herbs and teas sit alongside all of this. Our posts on chamomile, lavender and California poppy are good places to begin.
Supplements aren’t the whole picture
Light, caffeine timing and a steady wind-down routine tend to shape sleep more than any single ingredient. Our gentle evening wind-down routine and sleep hygiene after 40 posts cover that in detail.
Before you add anything new
Supplements affect people differently, and some can interact with medications. Please check with your healthcare provider before adding anything new, especially if you take medications, are pregnant or nursing, or have a health condition.
