If you’ve been reading through the sleep content here, you’ve seen me cover a lot of ground — the science of why sleep changes after 40, how different compounds work, what the research actually shows. That’s all useful context. But sometimes you just want to know: what should I actually buy?
This page is the short answer to that question. No lengthy explanations of mechanisms (those are in the individual posts if you want them). Just the four products I personally recommend, why I recommend each one, who each is best suited for, and where to get them.

#1 — Thorne Magnesium Glycinate: Best Overall
Who it’s for: Anyone starting out with sleep supplements, or anyone who wants the best-quality magnesium glycinate available.
Magnesium glycinate is the supplement I recommend to virtually everyone over 40 dealing with sleep issues, before anything else. Magnesium deficiency is extremely common in this age group, and low magnesium directly undermines sleep by impairing GABA receptor function, disrupting cortisol regulation, and reducing the body’s ability to produce melatonin naturally. Most people notice meaningful improvement in sleep quality — particularly in staying asleep and waking feeling more rested — within 2–4 weeks of consistent use.
Thorne is my top pick in this category for several reasons:
- NSF Certified for Sport — independently tested for purity and potency, which matters in a poorly regulated industry
- 200 mg elemental magnesium per serving — a meaningful therapeutic dose in a clean 2-capsule serving
- No unnecessary fillers — free of gluten, dairy, soy, and artificial additives
- Thorne’s manufacturing standards — one of the few supplement companies that manufactures to pharmaceutical-grade standards
It’s not the cheapest option on the market, but when I’m taking something every day I’d rather pay a little more for a product I trust completely.

#2 — NOW Foods Magnesium Glycinate: Best Budget Pick
Who it’s for: Anyone who wants to try magnesium glycinate without committing to a premium price, or who plans to take it long-term and wants to manage cost.
NOW Foods has been making supplements since 1968 and has built a reputation for consistent quality at accessible prices. Their magnesium glycinate is a genuinely solid product — GMP certified, third-party tested, and well-reviewed by a large customer base over many years.
A few things I like about it specifically:
- 100 mg elemental magnesium per capsule — makes it easy to start at a lower dose and titrate up, which I recommend for anyone new to magnesium supplementation
- GMP certified manufacturing — consistent quality controls
- Third-party tested — independently verified for label accuracy
- Significantly lower cost per serving — makes long-term daily use more sustainable
Many people who start with NOW Foods as a trial run end up staying with it long-term. A supplement you take consistently because you can afford it is always better than a premium product you run out of and don’t reorder.

#3 — Life Extension Herbal Sleep PM: Best Combination Formula
Who it’s for: People who have tried magnesium glycinate and want to go further, or those dealing with both sleep and anxiety who want a multi-pathway approach in one product.
Life Extension Herbal Sleep PM is the combination formula I recommend most, and the one I use personally alongside magnesium glycinate. It brings together four well-researched sleep-supporting compounds in one capsule:
- HonoPure Honokiol — a patented magnolia bark extract that modulates GABA-A receptors directly, increasing both non-REM and REM sleep time. This is the most mechanistically sophisticated natural sleep compound I know of.
- Lemon Balm — inhibits GABA transaminase (the enzyme that breaks GABA down), extending the calming effect of your brain’s own GABA
- Chamomile — contains apigenin, which binds to benzodiazepine receptors and has mild sedative and anti-inflammatory effects
- Passionflower — modulates GABA-A receptors through a different binding site, adding anxiolytic and sleep-onset support
What makes this formulation stand out is that these four ingredients work on different but complementary pathways — covering GABA-A modulation, GABA degradation inhibition, benzodiazepine receptor binding, and inflammation all at once. No single herb does all of that.
Life Extension is one of the most rigorously tested supplement companies available — they publish their research and submit products to third-party testing, which is not universal in the industry. This product uses the HonoPure extract (the specific form studied in clinical research) rather than generic magnolia bark powder, which matters for consistency and potency.
I take two capsules of this about 30 minutes before bed, alongside my magnesium glycinate with dinner. The combination covers the nutritional foundation (magnesium) and the GABA-system support (Herbal Sleep PM) simultaneously.

#4 — EcoNugenics HonoPure: Best Standalone Honokiol
Who it’s for: People who are already using a combination formula or other sleep supplements and want to add honokiol specifically, or those who prefer to manage their stack ingredient by ingredient.
EcoNugenics makes the HonoPure extract — the patented, standardized form of honokiol used in most of the clinical research. Their standalone HonoPure supplement is the most direct way to add honokiol to an existing stack without switching to a combination formula.
If you’re already taking magnesium glycinate and L-theanine and want to layer in honokiol specifically, this is the cleanest way to do it. You control the dose and can adjust independently.
It’s also worth noting that EcoNugenics is the original developer of the HonoPure extract — their product uses the exact material studied in clinical trials rather than a generic magnolia bark alternative. For a compound where standardization matters this much, sourcing it from the original developer is meaningful.

Where to Start: My Recommended Approach
If you’re not sure which product to begin with, here’s the order I’d suggest:
- Start here: Thorne Magnesium Glycinate (or NOW Foods if budget is a consideration). Take 200–400 mg of elemental magnesium with dinner. Give it 3–4 weeks before evaluating. Most people notice meaningful improvement at this stage alone.
- If your mind is still active at bedtime: Add L-theanine at 200 mg, 30 minutes before bed. (L-theanine is widely available — I’ll be adding a specific product recommendation here soon.)
- If sleep quality is still poor after 4–6 weeks: Add Life Extension Herbal Sleep PM. This is where the GABA-A modulation and herbal combination earns its place.
- If you want standalone honokiol: EcoNugenics HonoPure is the cleanest option for adding it to an existing stack.
One important note: add supplements one at a time, not all at once. Stacking everything simultaneously makes it impossible to know what’s helping — and adds unnecessary cost if one or two products alone would have been sufficient.
What I Don’t Recommend (And Why)
A few common sleep supplement categories I’d steer most people away from:
- High-dose melatonin (5–10 mg): The research supports 0.5–1 mg for sleep onset support. Higher doses can blunt your natural melatonin system over time and cause next-morning grogginess. If you use melatonin, use it at low doses and situationally — not as a nightly habit.
- Proprietary blends with undisclosed doses: If a supplement lists ingredients but not amounts, you have no way of knowing whether the doses are therapeutic. I only recommend products that disclose full label information.
- ZzzQuil, Unisom, and similar OTC sleep aids: These rely on diphenhydramine (an antihistamine) that causes tolerance rapidly — often within a few days — and can cause next-day cognitive impairment. Not appropriate for regular use, especially in adults over 40.
- Most “sleep gummies”: Typically underdosed, high in sugar, and formulated more for marketability than effectiveness. The doses of active ingredients rarely match what’s studied in clinical research.
The Bigger Picture
Supplements are one piece of the sleep puzzle — an important one, but not the whole story. The products above work best when you’ve also got the foundational pieces in place: consistent sleep timing, a proper wind-down routine, a cool and dark sleep environment.
If you want the full framework — everything I’ve found helpful for sleep after 40, including lifestyle factors, the full ingredient guide, and how it all fits together — my complete sleep guide and my natural sleep supplements guide are the places to go.
And if you’ve tried any of these products and want to share what worked, I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
