MCT oil is all the rage with the Keto crowd but what is MCT oil really? MCT stands for “medium chain triglycerides” or “medium chain fatty acids” and is derived from coconut and palm oils.
Coconut oil is great for a number of things including skin care, oral care (try the coconut pull) raising good cholesterol, killing microorganisms and helping with weight loss.
The difference between coconut and MCT oil is that the coconut oil has a combination of MCTs and LCTs (long chain triglycerides). LCTs are more difficult for the body to process because of their size. Coconut oil contains around 55% medium chain triglycerides while MCT oil is processed to be 100% MCTs.
The main health benefits for energy and weight loss are found in two types of medium chain triglycerides. Caprylic Acid (C8) and Capric Acid (C10). These are the types that are most beneficial in creating and maintaining ketosis.
The main reason that these products are so popular now are that they are great for weight loss and energy production. MCT oil is a staple of the Bulletproof Diet which is a variation of the Keto diet.
There are many of these products available today so it’s hard to know what to buy. We like oils that are processed from 100% coconut oils and developed with the Keto lifestyle in mind.
