Spiral Slicer Review

Our Spiral Slicer Review

I have been getting more and more into raw foods so I am buying new tools that help in that endeavor. One of these tools is a spiral slicer. The first one I got was not very good, it fell apart the first time I used it so it went back to the store the next day. I traded it in and paid the extra $20 for the better one. So here is my Spiral Slicer Review.

The one I got is the Paderno World Cuisine Tri-Blade Plastic Spiral Vegetable Slicer. Now this one works great! We made some spiral raw zucchini noodles with a great sauce made with cashews, tarragon, olive oil and green onions. This was a free recipe that we got from the Raw Chef.

The recipe calls for a mandoline slicer to make the noodles with but we wanted to do some spiral noodles so we got the spiral slicer.

Let me tell you about it.

Paderno Spiral Slicer Review Features

  • Easy to use
  • Comes  with 3 stainless steel blades:
    • Shredder: creates long, spaghetti-like spiral strands
    • Chipper: creates long, thick spiral strands
    • Straight: creates long, ribbon-like strands
  • Can be used with a variety of fruits and vegetables including apples, potatoes, carrots, cucumber, zucchini and more
  • Impact-resistant, BPA-free ABS plastic frame and blade plate construction
  • The integrated storage compartment holds extra blades
  • Powerful suction feet for stability with easy release tabs
  • Hand operated–no batteries or AC outlet necessary
  • Backed by a 1-year warranty
  • Available on Amazon through this link

Pros:

  1. This slicer is very easy to use. The Paderno is easy to assemble, just slide in the blade that you want to use. To start you need to attach the slicer to a surface. There are suction cups on each corner and they work OK but not great. Next you put the food that you want sliced in between the crank and the blade and with a little pressure applied to the side handle, turn the crank and you get spirals!
  2. I like that I don’t need to find an outlet for this slicer, it is all manual and the design makes in simple to use.
  3. Extra blades are included so you can make three different types of slices. These all make long strands so if you want shorter pieces you can make a cut in the produce that you are slicing and it will shorten the length.
  4. Easy storage for the extra blades. They fit right into the base of the slicer.
  5. The warranty is a good sign when buying an appliance like this. If it is less than a year then it probably won’t last too long. The Paderno has a 1 year warranty and feels sturdy.

Cons:

  1. The suction cups are designed well but I couldn’t get them to work easily. I’m sure there is a good technique to make them work but they didn’t work well for me.
  2. I’m not a huge fan a plastic appliances but this one is made from good quality BPA plastic so it is safe for your food.

Joyce B. says:

This is a must-have kitchen item for anyone who loves pasta and wishes to keep off extra weight while still enjoying all they want of it. As so many others have stated, this unit is more than sturdy enough to handle the job it was designed to do, my favorite being to make spaghetti out of zucchini.

My sister would not even try my zucchini pasta with marinara sauce the night I made it. It took me 10 minutes to convince her that it was all RAW zucchini, just warmed up by tossing it with hot spaghetti sauce! She was ready to concede that the strands with green skin on them were zucchini, but it was almost impossible to get her to believe that the pale strands from the center were not made from semolina wheat.

This unit rinses off very easily after using. It takes me less than 5 minutes to wash a couple large zucchinis, cut them into 2″ pieces, and run them through the spiral slicer.

Don’t hesitate to buy and try it. It’s actually FUN to use. It’s like I’m a kid playing with my Play-Doh machine again, only what comes out is very healthy to eat!

I wanted a spiral slicer for raw foods, but I didn’t want to spend the money for the expensive Japanese ones, since I am just starting with raw foods. I thought it would be like the crappy one Walmart sells, but was I surprised. It is solidly built for being plastic, the 3 different blades are easy to switch out, and it works great on all the raw food I put through it. It does leave a small core from where the food spins on the blades, but I just take the core and put it in with the sliced veggies. I love how zucchini strands come out for raw pasta and how I can get creative and have fun with the three different blades. I paid about $40 for this and worth every penny, oh yea, also very easy to clean.

Clarita says:

I use this to make zucchini pasta and it works very well. This slicer is easy and quick to use and clean. I tried others and didn’t like them.

The Paderno comes with three different blade assemblies that slide into the vertical slot. They are stored in the slots under the machine. The blade assemblies make it simple to switch blades, you never touch a blade, just slip the assembly into place. With other slicers, you need to unscrew and screw in the bare blade you want to use, which is more complicated and risky. The Benriner and Saladaccos are also harder to clean.

My single complaint is that after 2 years the rubber suction feet hardened and are useless, so there’s no more suction to keep it in place. I solve this by propping one end under the counter for leverage, but it’s a little awkward. I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because the feet wore out.

Conclusion:

Overall I like the Paderno World Cuisine Tri-Blade Plastic Spiral Vegetable Slicer. It is built well and easy to use. I agree that the suction cup feet are not the best design but other people have no issues with them. This spiral slicer is a great tool to add to your raw food kitchen. I hope this Spiral Slicer Review helps you decide.
