Music Therapy

As a musician and recording engineer I have been immersed in the music world for a long time. One of the more interesting aspects of music for me is music therapy.

I found this review in the World Journal of Psychiatry that shows that this type of therapy can be an effective treatment for mood disorders related to neurological conditions. These disorders include Parkinson’s disease, dementia, stroke, and multiple sclerosis.

What is Music Therapy

Music therapy is an evidence-based clinical use of musical interventions to improve clients’ quality of life.

Music therapy is based on music improvisation, creation, composition and listening by a therapist and patient. This is sometimes done in a one-on-one setting but other times conducted in groups. There are two main aspects; the active and the passive.

Active MT

Active MT deals with the interaction of the therapist and the patient. The active part of the therapy includes singing, playing an instrument and composing songs. When the patient is involved in playing an instrument, the therapy is designed to involve as many sensory organs as possible. MT incorporates touch, sight and sound. In the typical active MT session, the therapist and patient works together using instruments and voices and occasionally movement like dancing.

Passive MT

Passive MT is where the patient is usually as rest but listening to the therapist. With passive therapy, the therapist plays calming music while the patient visualizes peaceful images and reflects on their own feelings and sensations.

In both types of therapy, the rhythm and melody are manipulated to stimulate certain emotions, such as sadness, frustration, loneliness, grief, joy and gratitude.

I use calming music as a massage therapist to help my clients relax and get the most of their massage. Different types of music have different effects and as a massage therapist I want my clients to relax and be calm.

This video made me happy!
