Natural Health Supplements for Depression

Depression is more that just being sad and can be controlled with nutrition, exercise and supplements. We have seen that the pharmaceutical industry is dedicated to the reduction of depression symptoms but I have found several natural health supplements for depression. Some of these supplements work better than others for me and they all have extra benefits beyond anti-depressant qualities. Experiment with some of these and see how they effect you.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a great health supplement for depression and I notice a difference right away when I take it in the morning. The best form of vitamin D is the vitamin D3 supplement. This is a very important vitamin and many of us are deficient. There are few foods that contain it and the main source is from our skin when it is exposed to sunlight.

Moringa

Moringa oleifera is a tree that is native to the southern foothills of the Himalayas. The leaves of the moringa tree are the most nutritious part and are commonly used to make powders, teas or oils for the use in natural health supplements. Moringa leaves contain, Protein, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Iron, Riboflavin (B2), Vitamin A (from beta-carotene) and  Magnesium. The seed pods contain high levels of Vitamin C.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha or Withania somnifera is a perennial shrub that grows natively in India, China, Nepal and Yeman. Ayurvedic medicine uses it as natural health supplements to assist the body with healing wounds, reducing stress, depression and anxiety as well as relieving pain and helping with insomnia. Ashwagandha can be found in power/capsule form or as tea.

Gotu Kola

Gotu Kola is also known as Indian Pennywort and is used to naturally treat a variety of disorders including hair loss, psoriasis, anxiety and depression. This herb, Gotu Kola is commonly used to increased brain function and cognition.

Ginger Root

Ginger root is known as a universal medicine in the Ayurvedic tradition. With high levels of vitamin C and amino acids, ginger root helps with digestion, relieving stress, improving circulation, reducing feelings of depression and cancer prevention.

Turmeric

Turmeric is made from the Curcuma longa plant and is a spice that is commonly used in Indian cooking. This spice has some amazing health benefits that include; relief from depression, helps to reduce inflammation, promotes healthy skin, reduces gastrointestinal disorder and helps to naturally treat cancer.
