5 Home Grown Medicinal Plants

There are many medicinal plants that you can grow at home. We have chosen 5 that we like and that have multiple universal uses. Our Happy Healthy Living garden has all of these.

Top 5 Medicinal Plants You Can Grow At Home

1. Aloe Vera

One of the most common and well known medicinal plants is Aloe Vera. I remember using this for sunburns, cuts and scrapes as a child. You can also add this to a juice or buy aloe vera juice to help with digestive problems, constipation,  decrease inflammation in irritable bowel syndrome, colitis and other inflammatory disorders of the intestines.

 

We grow this in a medium sized pot and it is one of the easiest plants to grow. I was able to keep this plant alive as a unaware single man so that should tell you something about how easy it is to keep alive.

2. Chamomile

When I think of Chamomile I think of a relaxing tea but there are so many more uses for this plant. When I was in Germany touring with a band I got this allergy to something and my eye got all red and itchy. Fortunately we were able to use the knowledge of the master chef who owned the inn where we were staying. He created a simple concoction with fresh chamomile flowers from his herb garden and made a compress with it to put on my eye and the redness and itching disappeared within a day.

Some of the other ailment that chamomile is good for are the common cold, eczema, digestive problems, gastrointestinal conditions, toothache, earache, joint pain and common wounds.

 

3. Tea Tree

Tea tree oil is found in many consumer medicines such as cosmetics, shampoos and toothpaste. This is a great for skin care and can be used to control acne, dandruff, cold sores, insect bites, chronic fatigue syndrome and other skin conditions.

4. Peppermint

Peppermint is one of the oldest and best herbs for soothing digestion, it also may help support liver and respiratory function. It can be useful in improving taste and smell, mental sharpness and concentration and can be used in cooking.

Peppermint has plenty of vitamins A and C as well as manganese and can be used to relieve fevers, upset stomachs and irritable bowel syndrome.

 

5. Sage

Sage is a highly nutritious plant that is rich in antioxidants including apigenin, diosmetin, and luteolin and it also contains vitamin K. This is one of the plants that has many different medical and culinary uses.

Some of the research that has been done on sage shows that it is great for treating Alzheimer’s disease for memory performance, it is an anti-inflammatory and an anti-hyperglycemic which helps to control cholesterol and diabetes type 2.

Sage is a great salve for skin infections, gum infections, insect bites and mouth infections. It may also help with indigestion, depression and even menopausal problems.

 

These are just a few of the many medicinal plants that you can grow at home. These plants are also grown and harvested for their essential oils which have a great health value for happy healthy living.
